95% of bloggers give up. Can you believe that?
I can, because I know I’ve wanted to quit blogging MANY times.
Usually, it’s been because I’ve been burned out, gripped by imposter syndrome, or not making enough money.
But I’m sooo glad I didn’t. The truth is I love blogging and when I had my babies, I realised how grateful I was for blogging.
I was still able to make a full-time income after maternity leave despite only working 2 hours a day. This filled me with so much gratitude that I promised I would never take my blog for granted or give up.
But I do know what it’s like to really be fed up with blogging, especially if you’re not yet making enough money to justify how much time you spend on your blog.
Here I’m going to detail what you can do to stay motivated to blog when you want to quit blogging.
When should you give up on a blog?
Ask yourself why you want to quit blogging?
Do you really not enjoy blogging anymore? Is blogging just not for you?
Okay, then there’s nothing wrong with giving it up….nothing wrong at all.
But, I’d say wait. Take a 2 week or even a month’s break and see how you feel then.
If on the other hand you want to give up because you’re not seeing any results from your hard work, I encourage you not to.
Instead look at changes you can make to get back the love you once had for blogging.
Maybe you need to switch your blog’s niche to something you’re more passionate about?
Perhaps you need to channel your efforts into growing your blog traffic?
Or maybe you need to be more strategic with affiliate marketing so you can make more money blogging?
If you still enjoy blogging but are unhappy with the results you’re getting, I do encourage you to keep pushing.
7 ways to stay motivated to blog when you want to quit blogging
1. Remember why you first started
Maybe you started because you wanted to earn an income while being a stay-at-home mum? Or perhaps you needed a creative outlet? Write down your reasons why. Read them again and again whenever you get in a funk and feel demotivated.
2. Don’t compare yourself to other bloggers
This is such an easy thing to do, especially if it seems like other bloggers in your niche are more successful than you. Please don’t do this. You have your own unique skillset and will attract your own tribe. Strive to be the best that you can be by learning, practising and trying new blogging strategies.
3. Do more of the blogging tasks that you enjoy
For me, I’ve found that most of the time I’ve felt like giving up because I’d spend so much time doing blogging tasks that I don’t enjoy. I love writing. And if I spend more time not writing, blogging ends up feeling like a chore. Which blogging tasks do you enjoy the most? And how can you spend more time doing those tasks?
4. Have a plan and set goals
If you haven’t already, outline a plan for your blog and set some goals. If you don’t have goals to work towards, chances are you won’t feel motivated to blog.
Tracking your progress, and celebrating milestones will give you such a boost. Make reviewing your goals a special thing. Every quarter, settle down with your blog outline and list of goals.
Have a glass of wine, or a hot drink with a sweet treat (yum!) and analyse where you are now in comparison to where you first started.
I do this little ritual myself and I look forward to it too.
5. Talk to other bloggers
No one is going to know how you feel as much as other bloggers. Because they’ve probably been there too. If you’re part of a blogger Facebook group, share what you’re going through. The moral support and feedback you get will remind you that you’re not alone.
6. Pay attention to your thoughts
I really like this video by Tracy Hensel about controlling our negative thoughts. Everything she says in this video can be applied to the negative thoughts we can get as bloggers.
You know the thoughts that say “you’re not good enough”, “no one wants to hear from you” etc. Stay on top of these thoughts, and understand that they are not the truth.
The more you train yourself to respond to your negative thoughts by saying “I’m going to do it anyway!”, the better you’ll get at not letting negative thoughts demotivate you.
7. Believe you can do it
Let me be real with you. If any of your favourite bloggers can make money blogging, you can too. They don’t possess any superpowers. They’re just like you. The only difference? They stuck it out. So please believe you can do it. Because once you believe you’re halfway there. You just need to stay motivated and don’t give up.
